Garmin sells Accessory Maps, Travel Guides, Games and other downloadable software to improve the functionality of there GPS units. These cost from just over $10, to several hundred dollars. They also offer a couple of free, downloadable software programs that everyone with a Garmin GPS unit should try.
The 'Garmin Garage' lets you download 'Vehicles' and other assorted icons to personalize your GPS. There are over a hundred of these icons including aircraft, people and an assortment of fun objects including a tree, a canoe and a burrito. There are also a couple of alternative voices you can ad to your GPS. One is a elf, another a haunted voice and a third is the CEO of Garmin.
Another free software download for Garmin GPS units is the 'Points Of Interest' or POI Loader. This is free software for your computer that lets you store and upload customized Points Of Interest to your Garmin GPS. Garmin maintains a Custom POI Source page where you can find links to POI pages from Garmin and other third parties. Almost all of these sites are free but some ask for donations and others have premium POI's you have to pay for.
Although there are many excellent software programs you can buy for your GPS unit, these two downloads are a great way to customize and improve the functionality of your Garmin GPS without spending your hard earned cash.
